We researched and tested seven Himalayan salt lamps and selected The Body Source Himalayan Salt Lamp as the best for a large room. Standing at 12-inches tall, and weighing in at 12 pounds, this beautiful lamp glows a warm orange-red and makes a visual statement. If your home has an ultra-modern decor, then consider the d’aplomb salt lamp. This stylish and unusual lamp is rectangular and glows a vibrant white. Our third top choice is the Syntus mini salt lamp that’s perfect as a nightlight in a child’s or adult’s bedroom.
Himalayan salt lamps can make a beautiful addition to any room in your home. They range in size, weight, and color and are usually mounted on a wooden stand that’s neutral enough to match most furniture. Essentially, the lamp is made of a large rock of Himalayan salt mined usually in Pakistan, and a small light bulb is inserted into the salt’s hollowed-out center.
When warmed by the low-watt lamp, the salt releases negative ions that can purportedly purify and improve air quality. Some lamp manufacturers go so far as to claim their lamps improve sleep, clear up sinus congestion, increase energy level, and even neutralize electromagnetic radiation.
There isn’t enough (or much) scientific research that supports these alleged benefits. But that said, they certainly create a calming ambiance. The best salt lamps have a dimmable light that at full power illuminates the entire salt rock so that its intricate web of colored veins can be seen.
The lamps may look similar to each other, but in truth, they’re different since no salt rock is the same. Depending on your preference, the salt rock can be white, shades of pink, yellow, and/or orange. The low-watt bulb — usually 15 watts — can be clear or yellow, which changes the color of the salt rock. We prefer a clear bulb to see the salt’s natural color, but again, it’s all a matter of personal taste.

The Body Source - 10-12" Dimmable Salt Lamp
If you want to make a decor statement, The Body Source Himalayan Salt Lamp stands tall and bold. The Body Source lamp comes in three sizes, and we tested the 12-inch tall, 12-pound version. The salt rock in natural daylight is blood-orange with white striations that resemble snow-topped peaks.
This is a dimmable lamp and can be adjusted to glow from pink to salmon to bright red-orange. The salt rock is secured to a sturdy wood base that’s stained a light walnut. We tested this salt lamp in every room of the house, and it was most effective in the living room; an impressive but not imposing presence. We can’t attest to its properties, other than just looking at it was calming and soothing.
2
d'aplomb - Modern Himalayan Salt Lamp
The d’aplomb Himalayan salt lamp is the most sophisticated lamp we tested. It’s a gorgeous block of white salt that’s been hand-carved into a rectangle and attached to a dark-wood display stand. The 15-watt bulb is positioned high inside the salt, so when fully lit, the entire block is illuminated, revealing the beauty of this striated white salt.
It’s a dimmable lamp and can be adjusted from an incandescent glow to a bright white. At nighttime, this lamp is a stunner and is sure to be a topic of conversation with your guests. This is the most expensive salt lamp on our list, but if you have modern decor, it’s not just a lamp but a work of modern art.
3
Syntus - Wall Outlet Salt Lamp
We’ve tested our share of night lights but nothing like the Syntus Himalayan Mini Salt Lamp. It’s a 3-inch tall cylinder of pink salt rock attached to a nightlight 7-watt bulb and 360-degree rotating plug, so it can be positioned in any orientation. We also liked the silicone ring, attached to the bulb base, that keeps the salt rock securely in place if you opt to plug it in horizontally.
The lamp isn’t dimmable, but it has a pink glow that’s not too bright for a child’s or adult’s bedroom. It’s also ideal for lighting your way to the bathroom for those late-night visitations. The Syntus lamp is very affordable and can be bought for other locations in your home.
4
Himalayan Glow - Dimmable 7" Lamp
The Himalayan Glow is a white Himalayan salt lamp that sets it apart from the bright orange lamps. Resembling a rough-hewn chunk of ice, the salt rock weighs 6 pounds and is attached to a neem wood base. Neem wood’s grains interlock, which makes the wood strong and durable and an ideal base for supporting the heavy salt block.
The base for other lamps usually connects with two wire prongs that you need to squeeze together to get the bulb inside the salt rock. The Himalayan Glow lamp has three hard plastic tabs that fit snuggly inside the salt. The glow ranges from a pale yellow to a pure white and is a soothing companion on a bedstand. For such a large hunk of gorgeous salt, it’s amazing how inexpensive this salt lamp is.
5
Spantik - Dimmable 7" Lamp
The Spantik Himalayan Salt Lamp is medium-size, approximately 7 inches tall and weighs roughly 4 pounds. The lamp we tested wasn’t an especially pretty hunk of salt. It had a nice pale-orange glow but lacked natural veins and striations, which give the lamps their unique look.
The Spantik is well-priced, but it has a couple of flaws that we can’t overlook. First, the double-wire prong that holds the bulb inside the salt lacked tension, so the bulb kept popping out. Second, after a few minutes of use, the salt had an unpleasant chemical odor, which left us to surmise that it was not of the highest quality.
6
Fanhao - Multi-Color USB
The Fanhao salt lamp is a cute little lamp that’s great for your desk. The 4-inch salt rock resembles rose quartz, so it’s quite pretty even unlit. It’s a USB unit, and when plugged in, the lamp powers on. There are no controls for on/off or for adjusting lamp brightness and color.
The lamp cycles through eight colors, fading slowly from one to another, but the tiny 3-watt bulb only lights up the bottom half of the salt. Despite the manufacturer’s claim, the bulb doesn’t generate enough heat to activate the salt’s supposed benefits. It’s a bit expensive, but it will definitely make your office a cheery space.
7
Pure Enrichment - PureGlow USB Salt Lamp
The Pure Enrichment – PureGlow salt lamp has a unique design that compelled us to try it out. The lamp base is a 4-inch tall, round cup made of acrylic. Inside is a 5-watt halogen bulb, which generates a lot of heat and requires some sort of shield. The bulb does have a ventilated dome that sits on top, but when turned on at full, actually generates no heat to warm the salt, which, of course, defeats the purpose of a salt lamp.
Rather than a large salt rock, the Pure Enrichment comes with a 2-pound bag of pale-pink salt chunks, ranging in size from 1/4 inch to 1 inch, which you then pour into the lamp’s cup. You get enough salt chunks to fill the cup to the brim, but the weak light only illuminates the middle of the cup. Overpriced for what it is, this disappointing lamp lands at the bottom of our list.
